Peoples' Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) Group Deputy Chair Sezai Temelli has applied to the Parliamentary Human Rights Investigation Commission (IHIK) asking for clarification about prisoner Servet Özgün, who has been on a hunger strike for 55 days, requesting to be transferred closer to his family.
Taken into custody and sent to prison in the Sur district of Amed in 2004, Servet Özgün was sentenced to life imprisonment. Özgün is requesting to be transferred from Erzincan to Bursa. Temelli pointed out in his application that keeping the prisoner so far from his family was for punitive purposes and that both the prisoners and their families were seriously harmed.
Noting that the prisoner had not been able to see his family for 6 years, Temelli added that "family life" should be respected according to national and international norms. He added that Özgün was on hunger strike and his health was deteriorating fast, and called on the Human Rights Investigation Commission to take action.
