Sit-in to call for the release of ill prisoner Uçar

Avni Uçar has been in prison for 26 years serving a life sentence and suffers from cancer.

At the 334th week of the “F sit-in”, human rights defenders demanded the release of Avni Uçar, a prisoner suffering cancer.

The Human Rights Association (IHD) Istanbul Prison Commission gathered in Galatasaray Square to hold the 334th weekly "F sit-in”, promoted every week to draw attention to the situation of ill prisoners.

Avni Uçar has cancer and this week the action was dedicated to him.

Meryem Bars, a member of the IHD Prison Commission, read this week's press statement. Emphasizing that systematic state violence in prisons is ongoing, Bars said that the state aims to humiliate prisoners, alienate them and keep them away from social solidarity.

Avni Uçar, said Bars “was arrested in 1992 and learned he suffered from cancer during a visit to the hospital in 2006. Avni, - added Bars - is said to have bladder cancer since 2011. He was recently told that he had a high risk of cancer in his left kidney. Avni is a life sentence prisoner and has been transferred to various prisons of the country for 26 years".

The people who took part in the action called for Avni Uçar to be released and allowed to get proper treatment.
