Release of prisoner delayed over Kurdish identity remark

Nihat Şahin’s release from Tekirdağ Prison was postponed after he stated, “I paid the price to live with my Kurdish identity.”

Nihat Şahin, who has been held for 30 years in Tekirdağ No. 1 High-Security F-Type Closed Prison, was scheduled to be released on 4 May. However, the Prison Administration and Observation Board postponed his release on the grounds that he did not exhibit “good conduct.”

No disciplinary violations were identified in Nihat Şahin’s case, yet his release was blocked because he said he had “paid the price for 30 years to live with his Kurdish identity” and expressed that he felt “no remorse.” The Observation Board interpreted these statements as negative. Additional reasons cited by the board included his stay in a ward described as “organized,” his refusal to accept psycho-social support, and his participation in hunger strikes. Based on these factors, they claimed he was “not ready to reintegrate into society” and that he “posed a threat.” As a result, the board ruled that Şahin did not meet the criteria for “good conduct.”

The next review of his case is scheduled for 4 December.
