The release of Metin Toprak, who has been in prison for 30 years in Buca Kırıklar Prison, was delayed. Toprak, who was arrested in Bitlis in 1995, was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Diyarbakır State Security Court (DGM) on the charge of “disrupting the unity of the state.” Toprak, who was held in Antep, Batman, Rize and Kırıkkale prisons, was due to be released from Kırıklar Prison where he is currently held on 28 March. However, his release was delayed for 9 months on the grounds that he did not show “remorse”.
Stating that there was no legal basis for the postponement of her son's execution, his mother said: "I have a serious heart condition, my health prevents me to go to see my son. While the state extends a hand of peace to the Kurds on the one hand, it continues its war against them on the other. They are oppressing Kurdish children. Mr. Abdullah Öcalan had called for peace between the peoples. I support this call. Let this war end now."
