Prisoner died after late release from jail

Although Bedri Çakmak was suffering from stomach cancer, the political prisoner was released from prison in Amed only in the final stages of his illness. The prisoner aid organization TUHAD-FED blames the government for his death.

Former political prisoner Bedri Çakmak has passed away. This was announced by the umbrella organization of the prisoner aid organizations MED TUHAD-FED. Çakmak suffered from stomach cancer and was not released from prison despite appearing unfit for detention. In 2020, he suffered a fainting spell in the D-type prison Diyarbakir and had to be hospitalized. At that time, he weighed only 35 kilograms. The sentence was only suspended last year.

According to MED TUHAD-FED, Çakmak served 11 years in prison. His release came a year before the end of his sentence. "Although he was suffering from serious illnesses and an expert opinion on his being unfit for imprisonment was available, the prison sentence was only suspended in the final stages of his illness. The government is responsible for his death.”
