IHD holds action for prisoner Hatice Onaran

The IHD petitioned for the release of Hatice Onaran and an end to judicial repression against human rights defenders.

Hatice Onaran was arrested on the charge of “financing a terrorist organization” for sending money to prisoners.

The campaign launched by the Human Rights Association’s (IHD) Istanbul Branch Prison Commission to send money in solidarity with their imprisoned member Hatice Onaran continued this week.

A banner reading “End judicial repression against human rights defenders – Hatice Onaran is not alone” was held up during the statement in front of the IHD Istanbul Branch.

Gülseren Yoleri, chair of the IHD Istanbul Branch, stated that they would continue to fight for the annulment of the sentence given to Hatice Onaran.

Yoleri stated that they would be sending letters to the women’s prisons in Elazig, Gebze, Edirne, Sakran, Tekirdag, and Marmara, and added: “We are talking about 450 liras being deposited each day on behalf of different prisoners. Let them share with us and with the public how this money is being spent. We expect a reasonable explanation of how purchases made from the prison canteen could be considered financing terrorism. That is why we will send these letters to the prisons. We will share any response we receive with the public.”

Petitions were later submitted to the administrations of the prisons to which Hatice Onaran had sent money, as well as to the General Directorate of Prisons and Detention Houses (CTEGM), requesting information on how the funds were spent.
