DBP’s Tuncel and 14 female prisoners start hunger strike

DBP Co-chair Sebahat Tuncel and 14 other women have gone on a 10-day hunger strike demanding an end to the isolation of Öcalan.

The hunger strike launched by the jailed Co-chair of DTK (Democratic Society Congress) and Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) MP for Hakkari, Leyla Güven, has entered its 24th day.

Güven demands an end to the aggravated isolation imposed on Kurdish People’s Leader Abdullah Öcalan who has not been heard from for two years now.

Politicians, prisoners and civilians have also started hunger strikes in solidarity with the Kurdish politician, saying “Güven’s demand is our demand”.

Democratic Regions Party (DBP) Co-chair Sebahat Tuncel and 14 other women jailed in Kandıra No 1 F Type Prison in Kocaeli province have started a 10-day hunger strike in solidarity with Güven.

Tuncel shared the following message on behalf of the female prisoners joining the hunger strike: “Leyla Güven’s demand is the demand of millions of Kurds and their friends. The freedom of Mr. Öcalan is on a historic brink in terms of the struggle we have been giving for the peoples of our country, for democracy, freedom and honorable peace. Mr. Öcalan must be provided with the necessary conditions of health, safety and freedom and the isolation must be ended immediately. Basing on this perspective, we as 15 women in Kandıra Prison have launched a 10-day alternate hunger strike. We call on the Kurdish people and all democratic circles to claim this demand and to enhance the struggle for democracy and freedom.”
