Court of Cassation upholds prison sentences for 14 lawyers

The Turkish Court of Cassation has upheld the prison sentences for 14 leftist lawyers. The court reversed the verdict against Ebru Timtik who died in August after months of death fast demanding a fair trial.

Turkey’s Court of Cassation of Turkey has announced its verdict in the case against members of the Association of Contemporary Lawyers (ÇHD) and the People's Legal Bureau (HHB). The verdict against Ebru Timtik, who died at the end of August on day 238 of death fast for a fair trial, her sister Barkin Timtik, as well as Selçuk Kozağaçlı and Ezgi Çakır was overturned. The long prison terms for the remaining 14 lawyers, who are accused of membership or support of a terrorist organization were upheld.

The 37th Istanbul Criminal Chamber had sentenced the defendants to the following terms of imprisonment based on the testimony of a defector; Selçuk Kozağaçlı, Aytaç Ünsal, Engin Gökoğlu to 10.5 years; Barkın Timtik to 18 years and nine months; Behiç Aşçı and Şükriye Erden to 12 years; Aycan Çiçek to nine years; Ebru Timtik to 13.5 years; Naciye Demir to nine years; Özgür Yılmaz to 13.5 years, Ayşegül Çağatay, Yağmur Ereren, Didem Baydar Ünsal, Yaprak Türkmen to three years and nine months, Ahmet Mandacı and Zehra Özdemir to three years, one month; Ezgi Çakır to eight years.
