Parliament Speaker Numan Kurtulmuş visited the DEM Party’s parliamentary group. Kurtulmuş was accompanied by AK Party Parliamentary Group chair Abdullah Güler and deputy chair Leyla Usta Şahin.
DEM Party co-chairs Tülay Hatimoğulları and Tuncer Bakırhan, along with Group deputy Chairs Gülistan Kılıç Koçyiğit and Sezai Temelli, met the delegation.
The meeting, held in the context of the parliamentary election for the speaker of parliament, also included discussions on the role of the parliament and necessary steps related to the Peace and Democratic Society process. A joint statement was made following the meeting.
DEM Party co-chair Tülay Hatimoğulları said: "The period we are going through, along with the Peace and Democratic Society Call and subsequent developments, has placed significant duties and responsibilities on the parliament. Today, we discussed these matters with the Speaker of Parliament. We had the opportunity to thoroughly evaluate the responsibilities and duties of the parliament regarding the resolution of these issues, the establishment of the peace process, and the democratization of Turkey. We also heard from the Speaker that a commission within the parliament, which we believe, as Mr. Bahçeli also stated, will make a major contribution to resolving this process, will be initiated under his leadership. We sincerely thank them for their kind visit and wish them success in the upcoming period."
Numan Kurtulmuş said that as part of his visits to political parties, he met with the DEM Party’s parliamentary group and held a productive discussion. He emphasized that they exchanged views on how the parliament can fulfill its responsibilities to resolve the country’s problems, enhance democratic standards, and strengthen peace and brotherhood.
He added: "Thankfully, following the statement from Imralı and the subsequent announcement by the organization to lay down arms, the issue has reached a stage where it can now be addressed in the Grand National Assembly of Turkey, which is the center of politics and national will in Turkey. We believe that all political parties should seize this historic opportunity constructively to bring this process to a close and begin a new era in Turkey. I hope that the commission to be established in the coming days in the Grand National Assembly will be able to operate as efficiently as possible. We will make preliminary preparations regarding how the commission will be structured and what working methods it will follow. On the occasion of the election for the speaker of parliament, we are visiting MHP, CHP, now DEM Party, and soon İYİ Party and others, to exchange ideas about the broader issue. I hope this period will be beneficial and auspicious for Turkey."
