Making a statement following the verdict of the Danish court, Roj TV Executive Board said that; “We welcome the court decision with respect however we don’t believe we commit any crime.”
Copenhagen City Court has announced the verdict of the closure case against Roj TV on the Working Journalists Day on 10 January. Charging the Kurdish channel with making propaganda for the PKK (Kurdistan Workers’ Party), the court rejected the demand for the closure of Kurdish satellite channel. “There is no legal ground for the revocation of the channel’s licence and the seizure of channel’s assets”, ruled the court and punished Roj TV A/S and Mesopotamia Broadcasting A/S by a pecuniary penalty on the grounds of violating the anti-terror law of Denmark.
Roj TV Executive Board said the followings in the statement; “Roj TV has been exposed to the pressure and oppression policies of the Turkish State since its establishment. Making attempts in both diplomatic and legal areas for the closure of our channel, the Turkish state which has a black register in respect to the freedom of expression and press has attempted to direct Danish legal authorities. As a result of these attempts, a case was opened in September 2010 for the closure of our TV channel. The case was concluded on 14 December 2011 and the decision was announced on 10 January 2012.
The counsel for the prosecution demanded the closure and dispossession of our TV however the Court rejected this demand and imposed pecuniary penalty on our companies on the grounds of ‘knowingly making propaganda’.”
Pointing out the moral certainty that the channel will continue to face policies of pressure and oppression for exposing the war policies of the Turkish state, Roj TV in this sense called its audience to protect their own establishment more than ever.
The statement ended with a thanks to Roj TV’s real owners, the peoples of Kurdistan who have protected the channel since the very beginning, and the channel’s all colleagues and friends who represent the value judgments of European peoples.
“With the rise of the ‘ROJ’ (sun) every morning, Roj TV will continue to tell you the truths and to sing the songs of forbidden languages”, added the statement.
