ÖGC: 8 journalists detained, 5 arrested in Turkey in 15 days

The Association of Free Journalists (ÖGC) pointed out that journalists doing their job in Turkey are facing increasing detentions, arrests, threats and attacks alongside the ongoing censorship of news agencies and portals.

The Association of Free Journalists (ÖGC) has released its report on right violations targeting press members during the last 15 days. Accordingly, 8 journalists were detained, 5 were jailed and 4 others were tortured in custody during this period.

The ÖGC report pointed out that journalists doing their job in Turkey are facing increasing detentions, arrests, threats and attacks alongside the ongoing censorship of news agencies and portals.

Remarking that right violations have shown an increase in parallel with the escalating conflict in Turkey, the ÖGC report said journalists that write about the state's repression, unjust and unlawful practices against the people are being subjected to pressure.

According to the ÖGC report, 8 journalists were detained, 5 were arrested and 4 others were tortured in custody during the first 15 days of May. 2 journalists were battered during news coverage, 2 others were threatened and 3 were arbitrarily obstructed from doing their job.

In addition, 3 journalists were attacked, 7 subjected to investigation, 4 others faced 3 lawsuits and 6 were punished.

On the other hand, a news agency was censored 3 times, broadcast of a TV channel was blocked, a media blackout was imposed 5 times and 4 media organs were banned. Additionally, 2 journalists were fired during the first 15 days of May.
