French group Eutelsat stopping the broadcast of Med Nûçe was condemned during a conference held in the European Parliament.

French group Eutelsat stopping the broadcast of Med Nûçe was condemned during a conference held in the European Parliament.

Heval Nesrin Aslan and Maxime Azadi from Kurdish media attended the conference hosted by German Left Party (Die Linke) and French Left Front (Front de Gauche) as speakers.

European Parliamentarian from Die Linke Martina Michels spoke in the conference held on Tuesday in the European Parliament building in Strasbourg and reacted against the Eutelsat decision.

Eutelsat had stopped Med Nûçe’s broadcast by the demand of the Turkish state on October 3.

Journalist Heval Nesrin Aslan spoke at the conference, pointed out the pressure the media faces in Turkey, and recalled the dozens of television and radio networks that have been closed in just the last few days. Aslan pointed out that an Özgür Radyo worker was dragged by her hair , and described it as “dragging freedom of press on the ground.” Aslan said the pressure had been climbing for the last year and that there were more than 90 imprisoned journalists now in Turkey and that there was no channel left to reflect the voice of the opposition.

Journalist Maxime Azadi pointed out the encouraging role Europe plays in the ongoing fascistic policies of Turkey. Journalist Azadi said: “Eutelsat stopping the broadcast of Med Nûçe is a very dangerous message that encourages the oppression in Turkey.” Azadi said the Western governments were in cahoots with the Turkish government and that they should stop, and continued: “At this point, they should put the good will declarations aside, and take concrete precautions and impose sanctions.”

Lastly, Marie-Christine Vergiat from Front de Gauche pointed out the increasing pressure on journalists in Turkey and the unlawfulness of the stopping of Med Nûçe’s broadcast. Vergiat said they should be pressuring the Council of Europe regarding Med Nûçe.

Kurdish media workers Heval Nesrin Aslan and Maxime Azadi also met with the International Federation of Journalists representatives on the same day in Brussels. The federation decided to hold a press conference on the pressures on Kurdish and opposition media.
