DFG: Three journalists sent to prison in November

The November report published by the DFG on the rights violations against journalists said that 40 reporters are in prison, while 21 were taken into custody.

The Dicle Fırat Journalists Association (DFG) published its November report on Rights Violations Against Journalists. The report said that rights violations against journalists increased in November following the appointment of trustees by the AKP-MHP government. The report added that many journalists were subjected to attacks and obstructions by the police during anti-trustee protests.

21 journalists taken into custody in November

14 journalists, most of them freelance, have been taken into custody simply because they reported news and received payments in return for this news. Journalists Roza Metina, Ahmet Sümbül, Erdoğan Alayumat (freelance journalist), Bilge Aksu (freelance journalist), Tuğçe Yılmaz (Bianet), Suzan Demir (Gazete Duvar), Serap Güneş (freelance journalist), Havin Derya, Mehmet Uçar (freelance journalist), Bilal Seçkin (freelance journalist), Baver Yoldaş, cartoonist and journalist Doğan Güzel, Berfin Atlı and Mehmet Yaşar Abatan were all taken into custody. Following three days of detention, Mehmet Üçar and Bilge Aksu were remanded in custody. A total of 21 journalists were detained in November. The report noted that journalists who wanted to cover the protests held as part of the 25 November, International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, were also prevented from doing their job. Free Citizen reporter Irem Kabataş was detained.

40 journalists in prison

According to the report, the attacks on journalists were as follows:

"Journalists attacked: 3;

Journalists whose homes were raided: 13;

Journalists taken into custody: 21;

Journalists remanded in custody: 3;

Journalists threatened: 5;

Journalists prevented from following the news: 9;

Journalists subjected to ill-treatment: 6.

Again, the report said that there were investigations into 8 journalists, lawsuits against 6 journalists, 88 thousand 80 TL fines given to 2 journalists. In addition, the trial of 98 journalists in 44 files is ongoing, and the number of journalists under arrest is 40 as of 2 December. Two journalists were dismissed, 39 broadcasts were banned by RTÜK, one seizure decision was issued, access to 6 news items was blocked, one website was closed, and access to 3 social media content was blocked."
