In a written statement BDP (Peace and Democracy Party) Group Chair and Iðdýr MP Pervin Buldan reacted to the detention of journalists and warned that Turkey was proceeding to an authoritarian regime.
Buldan commented the journalists’ detention as worrisome and underlined that; “The intended blockade on opponent press should be removed in the soonest time.”
Buldan described the current situation of the country as follows; “All opponent journalists have been arrested; politicians, academicians, authors, artists and human rights have been put in prison. Democratic opposition has been suppressed; democracy, freedoms, justice and law have been suspended. The authoritarian regime rules over all areas.”
The inclusion of opponent journalists to the operation against politicians apparently reveals the authoritarian mentality that Turkey faces, underlined Budan.
Buldan also reacted to the silence of the Turkish media about the detention of dozens of journalists and added; “The mainstream media hasn’t presented a remarkable reaction against the operation which targeted around 50 journalists for days ago. These unlawful operations are neglected as if nothing had happened. While opponent papers write the news on headlines for days, the mainstream media unfortunately doesn’t hear this scream.” Buldan commented the silence of the Turkish media as a sign of a worrying picture.
Buldan remarked that this operation was an obvious suppression which already aimed to expand the mechanism of suppression, silencing, pressure and auto control on the press.
The silence of press means the silence of the society as well, pointed out Buldan.
MP Buldan also warned that tomorrow will be the turn of those who remain silent today.
The sole crime committed by detained journalists is to write the truths, noted BDP Group Chair and commented the questions directed to journalists- such as “why they make news” as the point where law and justice end.
Buldan also condemned the dominant mentality which –she remarked- considered opposition as crime and opponent people as criminals.
The operations against politics, politicians and journalists intend to forbid thoughts, noted Buldan and called on the Turkish government to abandon these authoritarian implementations and to get itself out of the shame of being a country which arrests journalists.
Buldan ended the statement calling on all press associations and democracy powers to not to remain silent about the detention of journalists.
