Özel-Demirtaş meeting: ‘Normalization is not possible without the rule of law’

Jailed Selahattin Demirtaş, former co-chair of the HDP, made a statement after his meeting with CHP chair Özgür Özel.

Özgür Özel, leader of the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP), visited Selahattin Demirtaş, former co-chair of the Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) who is currently being held in Edirne Prison.

Demirtaş announced the meeting on his social media account and thanked Özgür Özel for his visit. He stated that many issues were discussed, from the social and economic crisis Turkey is going through to the search for democracy and justice.

Demirtaş stated that society’s desire for justice, peace and strong unity came to the fore, and added that politics in Turkey has been stuck for many years and that the state has been governed by unconstitutional practices. "If the process that President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan calls ‘normalization, softening’ is to be grounded and to take on flesh and blood, the first thing that needs to be done is to respect the rule of law in every field. Without this, political channels would not open and the ground for normalization would not be formed."
