Symbolic Kurdish class in Yildiz university

Kurdish university students formed a symbolic Kurdish class in a demonstration to mark UNESCO's World Mother Language Day in Yildiz Technical University in Istanbul.

Carrying banners which read “W”, “X” and “Q” letter which are banned by the Turkish government because they exist in Kurdish alphabet hundreds of students chanted the slogan “Long live the brotherhood of the nations”.

The students gathered in front of the university's main building and read a statement criticizing Turkish governments politics against Kurdish cultural rights.

Student platform which organized the demonstration protested Turkish governments approach of denial against Kurdish demands for education in mother language as well as legal proceedings against Kurdish activists.

“How will the denial of a basic right to have education in mother language fits with a system said to be 'democratic'” the students statement said.

Students called the Turkish government to fulfill its obligations from international conventions which guarantees linguistic rights.

“No person shall be separated from his or her mother language and subjected to assimilation. This is a crime against humanity. The demand to have education in our mother language is one of our basic rights and shall be recognised immediately” the statement said.

Later the students formed a symbolic Kurdish class in front the university's main building.
