This story would be unbelievable if not heard from the people who are living it directly. The Tatvan Public Prosecutor opened an investigation against 102 year-old Lalihan Akbay for attending a mawlid, a religious ceremony for her son, Mehmet Rauf Akbay, who was a PKK guerrilla and lost his life in an armed conflict in 1985 in the Iraqi Kurdistan Region.
The 102 years old woman is being investigated for “making propaganda for an illegal organization.”
Bianet talked with her son, Tevfik Akbay. He said that the investigation was initiated after she talked with the media during the religious ceremony organized in the Tatvan Democratic Solution Tent on April 16, 2011. "She can barely hear and speak" he said.
Tevfik Akbay cannot understand how the prosecutor initiate an investigation for someone of her age and health condition. "She immediately forgets what she said."
The prosecutor also opened investigations against Servin Karakoç and Peace and Democracy Party Tatvan Co-Chair Zahide Karadaþlý for attending the ceremony.
According to Karakoç’s statement, she was not in Tatvan at the time of the ceremony.
The intestigation file was transferred to Van Prosecutor's Office from Bitlis. Tevfik Albay went to Van to talk with the prosecutor, but was told to go back again in 10 days.
