Request for opening grave accepted by Prosecutor

An application for permission to open an anonymous grave in Mardin Kapý Cemetery was made by the families of Feti Yýldýrým and Hakký Kaya, who disappeared in 1994 and 1996 respectively. The Diyarbakýr Special Public Prosecutor decided that excavation of the grave can begin.

A prosecutor and Human Rights Association (ÝHD) Diyarbakýr Branch directors took part in the process of opening the grave.

They took some bones from the graves and blood samples from Yýldýrým and Kaya families to send to the Istanbul Forensic Medicine Institution for DNA tests.

The ÝHD directors have applied to excavate a total of 10 graves. ÝHD asked families of the missing and eyewitnesses to apply to the ÝHD.

Feti Yýldýrým disappeared in 1994 and Hakký Kaya in 1996. According to a statement made by Abdülkadir Aygan, a Gendarmerie Intelligence and Anti-Terror Unit (JÝTEM) gunman, the two died after the JÝTEM tortured them.

According to the ÝHD’s records, 26 mass graves have been found in the Diyarbakýr area, but, according to cemetery officials, there are many more.
