Police in Ankara detain workers collecting paper to recycle it

Paper and other waste collector workers were arrested by Turkish police on the grounds that "collecting paper is prohibited in Ankara".

In Ankara, 5 waste paper collector workers were arrested by the police while they were working. The workers, who were taken to the Kavaklıdere police station in Çankaya, were kept waiting for 2 hours. The police finally said they had been detained because "it is forbidden to collect papers in Ankara".

Workers who requested legal assistance were fined 204 TL for allegedly "abusing others by pushing them to sell goods or services" in accordance with Article 37 of the Misdemeanour Law. The workers were later released.
