Former DIHA journalist Oğlağı remanded in custody

Former DIHA journalist Cengiz Oğlağı was remanded in custody on charges of "membership of an illegal organization" for filming a street protest in Cizre in 2012.

Former Dicle News Agency (DIHA) journalist Cengiz Oğlağı was taken into custody and referred to the Cizre Courthouse. In his statement to the Criminal Court of Peace, he said that he recorded newsworthy footage as a journalist and added: "Any journalist in my position would have done the same thing. I have no ties to any illegal organization."

The court ruled to remand Oğlağı and Belçim Kalay, who was also tried in the same case, in custody on the grounds that there was concrete evidence of "membership of an illegal organization." This is an arbitrary and systematic accusation used to charge journalists and activists. Both men were sent to Şırnak T Type Closed Prison.
