A two-day ecology workshop by the Kurdish European Association KCDK-E took place in Freiburg over the weekend. Members from various countries, representatives of the Kurdish Women's Movement in Europe (TJK-E), the Jineolojî Committee and the youth movements as well as academics and climate activists took part in the working meeting.

In addition to women's liberation and grassroots democracy, ecology is a central approach of the Kurdish freedom movement in the fight for a just and sustainable social order. Fatoş Göksungur, KCDK-E spokesperson for ecology, said at the opening of the workshop on Saturday that this topic has so far been neglected in view of the war in Kurdistan.

"In Europe, we have been working in the field of ecology for about a year and a half and have set up a committee. When preparing this workshop, we also noticed how inadequately this topic is being dealt with. The ecological approach plays a secondary role in the life of Kurdish society," said Göksungur. The workshop also discussed the events in Kurdistan and in particular the attacks against Rojava.

The workshop discussed how and according to which principles the fight against ecocide can be organized. The first day dealt with the definition of ecology and ecological perspectives as well as the environmental movements in Kurdistan and the Middle East.

İbrahim Esed, Co-chair of the Local Administrations and Environment Committee of the Autonomous Administration of Northern and Eastern Syria, evaluated the developments in Rojava, studies on ecology, and the ecological damage caused by the attacks by the Turkish state.

In line with the discussions, the establishment of the European-Kurdistan Ecology Movement (TEV-EKO) was announced. Fatoş Göksungur and Tuncay Ok were unanimously elected as co-spokespersons of TEV-EKO.
