The ribes plant (Rheum ribes or Syrian rhubarb), which grows at an altitude of 1,000 to 4,000 meters in mountainous areas, has begun to emerge. While there are 60 types of Rheum plants in the world, only one type grows in Kurdistan.
Ribes plants, which start to grow in May, the last month of spring, and have a life span of about one month, take their place on the counters until June.
Ribes took its place on the counters in bundles in Dersim this year as an indispensable springtime staple with its yellowish, white blooming, sour taste.
Ribes, which are grown in many parts of Dersim, are also grown on Sultan Mountain, which reaches 3,000 meters in Ovacık district.
Sultan Mountain, located around the Ağdat village of Ovacık, grows ribes in the upper parts of the mountain after a 7-kilometer hike.
It is stated that ribes, which is widely consumed among the people in Kurdistan, is good for many cancer diseases.
