DBP and DEM Party celebrate Gezi resistance on its 12th anniversary

The co-chairs of the DBP and the DEM Party issued statements marking the 12th anniversary of the Gezi resistance.

The co-chairs of the Democratic Regions Party (DBP), Çiğdem Kılıçgün Uçar and Keskin Bayındır, along with the co-chairs of the Peoples' Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party), Tülay Hatimoğulları and Tuncer Bakırhan, shared posts on their social media accounts to mark the 12th anniversary of the Gezi resistance.

The co-chairs of the DBP and the DEM Party wrote the following:

Çiğdem Kılıçgün Uçar: “The light ignited by millions of resisters twelve years ago in Gezi Park against the government’s profiteering policies continues to illuminate our path. The unique resistance, which included all segments of society in the face of political aggression, left deep marks in our collective memory. Those who defended their living spaces stood not only for a park and trees but also demonstrated an impactful example of civil disobedience for democracy, peace, and freedom. We will never forget the leading role of our comrade Sırrı Süreyya Önder in the Gezi Resistance, which emerged as a legitimate, democratic, and righteous response to a repressive and authoritarian mindset. We will take the Gezi Resistance, which strengthened the bonds of equality and solidarity among peoples, as our guide and further grow this struggle, shoulder to shoulder. Once again, I commemorate with reverence the lives we lost in this resistance and bow with respect before their memory.”

Keskin Bayındır: “I salute the Gezi Resistance, which has been a source of inspiration for democracy, peace, and collective struggle, and once again remember with longing those who lost their lives during this resistance. Without a doubt, the Gezi Resistance was the shared will of millions who raised their voices for freedom, justice, and ecological life against plunder, the commodification of nature, and an oppressive order. On the anniversary of this resistance, which represents the common conscience of society, we once again reaffirm our determination to rebuild a democratic society where peoples and beliefs can live equally, freely, and together. This ground, where the Kurdish people’s struggle for freedom meets the quest for democracy of the peoples of Turkey, shows us that a shared future is indeed possible. The democratic transformation that will open the door to building that future can only be achieved through a social contract based on equal participation of peoples, pluralism, and democracy.”

Tülay Hatimoğulları: “Our proud resistance, Gezi, turns 12! Gezi was the will of millions. Gezi was the united voice of this country’s conscience. Gezi was us, Gezi was all of us.”

Tuncer Bakırhan: “On the anniversary of the Gezi Resistance, we once again stand on the side of peace, justice, and democratic society. Gezi was the call for freedom and justice rising from all corners of this land. It was the most concrete expression that different identities, beliefs, and ways of life can stand together in brotherhood. We will continue to defend social peace and democratic life, to walk toward a future without conflict, in the language of peace, for a true democracy grounded in the will of the people.”
