Austrian parliament to debate Turkish attacks on Kurdish territories

The Austrian Parliament will debate a draft law demanding an end to the invasion attacks of the Turkish state against South Kurdistan and North and East Syria.

The opposition parties in the Austrian Parliament; the Social Democratic Party of Austria (SPÖ), the Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ) and the New Austria and Liberal Forum (NEOS) introduced a draft law about the invasion attacks of the Turkish state against Rojava (northern Syria) and southern Kurdistan (northern Iraq) which are located within the official borders of Iraq and Syria. The bill demands an end to the Turkish attacks and asks Turkey to comply with international laws.

The draft law, which includes an appeal for the Vienna government to warn the Ankara government, was first brought up at the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Parliament last week. Following a debate at the committee, government partners the Austrian People's Party (ÖVP) and the Greens also announced their support for the draft law which envisages a serious warning to the Turkish state.

ÖVP: END THE CRACKDOWN ON HDP

The ÖVP, the biggest partner of the government which holds the prime ministership, said that efforts should be made to ensure that Turkey respects the rule of law and human rights, the jailed journalists are released and the crackdown on the HDP ends. The opposition SPÖ requested Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg to make a statement condemning the closure case against the HDP.

After the debate, the draft law will be brought to the agenda of the Parliament today at noon. The draft law prepared under the lead of parliamentarians Reinhold Lopatka, Dr. Ewa Ernst-Dziedzic, Petra Bayr, and Dr. Helmut Brandstätter, is very likely to be recognized by a majority of votes in today's session.
