Politicians from the DEM Party visited the grave of Narin Güran in Amed (tr. Diyabakir) on Wednesday. The eight-year-old from the village of Çûlî (Tavşantepe) disappeared on 21 August and was found dead 19 days later. Her body was dumped in a sack at the edge of a stream near her home.

The event organised by the Women's Assembly was attended by the DEM Party Women's Assembly Spokesperson Halide Türkoğlu, Diyarbakır Metropolitan Municipality co-mayors, MPs, district co-mayors, provincial administration, TJA (Free Women’s Movement) and DBP (Democratic Regions Party).

Speaking at the cemetery, DEM Party Co-chair Tülay Hatimoğulları stated the following: “We are at Narin's grave. For 19 days we waited for the good news that she was alive. But then we all heard the painful news of her death. There's a huge mystery surrounding Narin's death. Unfortunately, there are hundreds of Narins in Turkey. There are thousands of children whose stories are unknown, who cannot tell the closest ones about the sexual abuse or violence they have experienced. Thousands of children are murdered in this way. The murderers are the male-dominated system itself, this system and the government itself, and the micro-powers in the localities. Here at Narin's grave, I respectfully commemorate all the children who were sexually abused, those murdered by their relatives and this male-dominated system, those murdered by police vehicles, those murdered in the war in Palestine.

I would like to remind society of its responsibility. Unfortunately, the current state mentality, this male-dominated system has protected murderers, harassers and rapists, but not women and children. They did not allow the development of laws to protect women and children. Unfortunately, the Istanbul Convention, which protects women, and the Law No. 6284, which was enacted to prevent women and children from being subjected to violence, have unfortunately come under discussion due to the current government’s policies hostile to children and women. The Istanbul Convention was to protect us. 6284 is to protect children and women. They opened these up for discussion. Child murders, Narin's murder and murders of women are all political. Children are the future of this society. It is the duty of adults, society and the public to provide an environment where children can happily study and play. It is the duty of the public to protect children. It is the duty of the public to insist on laws that will protect children. Narin was murdered because we could not establish a social order to protect children.

They are telling us not to politicise Narin's death. From the beginning, we have not shared our observations with the public in order not to influence the investigation process. 19 days later, why are they hiding how Narin was killed and by whom? What are they hiding in Tavşantepe? The mentality that protects them, the organisations within the law enforcement forces that protect them, the organisations within the deep state are uncomfortable with us asking these questions. We are aware of this. But we will continue to ask these questions.

The law enforcement force, which has the infrastructure to uncover even the murders by most professional mafia, used all its experience and criminal knowledge to prevent the disclosure of Narin's murder, how she was murdered and why she was murdered.

Who today would know how to put that child's body in a sack, fix it with stones and let it deform in water for 19 days? Those who are not technically specialised in this subject cannot know. We, for example, learnt with this incident that such methods do exist. No one can know that. If it was an ordinary murder, there would not have been such professional support. This murder, just like Susurluk, has exposed how the state, mafia and politics are intertwined. Just as Susurluk exposed that dirty organisation, Narin's murder has also exposed the paramilitary forces and the state's policy here.

It is neither Narin nor her uncle and aunt who are protected here. If there had been an incident between relatives - whatever you want to call it - this issue would have been cleared up long ago.

From here, we would like to ask the following questions clearly: How can an MP of a political party (Galip Ensarioğlu, AKP MP for Diyarbakır) come out and say, ‘We know about the incidents, but they are between family members, we don't talk about them’? Does he mean the Güran family or the state itself? Let him explain this. This is a matter of investigation. It is also a crime that this MP of the ruling party has not been subjected to an investigation until today.

We hereby make a criminal complaint for the statement he made to the public. We invite the authorities to take action against him. The order of friendship established by him is an order of enmity for this society. A friendship built on the tiny body, the soul, the childhood and the future of Narin lying in this grave cannot be a friend of society, human beings and children. Theirs is an enemy alliance, an alliance of JİTEM. This is an alliance with paramilitary forces. We never accept this.

For what purpose and by whom were the statements leaked to the press despite the confidentiality order?

Whose understanding buried Narin in an underwater grave?

Our struggle will continue until no child is abused in these lands, until violence against all children is eliminated, until we create an environment where children can play carefree in playgrounds.

I would like to say this once again at the grave of our dear Narin. The residents of some villages in the region, which have been turned into arms depots etc. and the base of some political parties, should know that these weapons will turn around and shoot the villagers themselves, and turn the people against each other. We are in favour of a democratic solution to the Kurdish question. Our struggle against the pro-war and pro-conflict mentality that pits us against each other in order not to solve these problems, that tries to prevent us from even claiming our dead children, will continue on the ground of peace.

Dear Narin, we promise you that not only on behalf of DEM Party women but also on behalf of Turkey and Kurdistan, we women will defend you and your right to life until the end. Dear Narin, I will not be able to tell you to sleep in peace. Even your dead body was tortured. You lost your life in such a society. We are saddened more than words can express. It is the duty of all of us, the whole society, to fight to prevent such incidents from happening to another child like you. From here, I invite the whole society to fight harder on this issue. I thank you all very much, and I remember Narin once again with respect.”
