Support and projects for people with disabilities in Northern and Eastern Syria

The meeting of the offices for people with disabilities in the cantons of Northern and Eastern Syria, said that educational projects and programs would be opened through the Social Affairs Board.

The Social Affairs Board of Northern and Eastern Syria held a meeting in the hall of the board building in Raqqa about the working mechanism of the offices for people with disabilities in the cantons of the region.

The meeting was attended by the co-chairs of the board, deputy co-chairs, the Social Affairs Boards of the cantons and representatives of the offices for people with disabilities.

Social Affairs Board co-chair Meryem Îbrahîm said: "We came together to evaluate the working mechanism with the offices for people with disabilities. In the statement we previously sent to the cantons to explain our planning, we requested that all our citizens, especially those with disabilities, be classified according to their own conditions and that our citizens with disabilities be identified by establishing special health committees.

However, in some cantons, the health committees that should be established in two categories could not be established. The first category includes the physically disabled (people with disabilities in hand and foot and paralyzed), and the second category includes the mentally disabled (people with mental problems and Down syndrome). Special committees will be established."

The participants drew attention to the difficulties faced by the offices such as renewing old cards, simplifying issues related to the disabled, and providing electric wheel chairs. They also expressed their views on the need to provide full support to the disabled.

Meryem Îbrahîm underlined that the services provided to people with disabilities are more spiritual than material and that new cards will be given to citizens, She added that they will carry out projects on the internet and prepare a knowledge base in cooperation with the Social Affairs Board and international organizations, and noted that they will ensure that disabled citizens participate in social life and take their place in institutions and other areas.
