Nine medieval churches and monasteries in Midyat and the surrounding area (Tur Abdin) in the province of Mardin have been added to the UNESCO’s World Heritage Tentative List.
The region of Tur Abdin (“the Mountain of the Servants of God” in Syriac), has been home to a new and unique architectural style associated with the Syriac Orthodox community throughout history. Tur Abdin, a limestone plateau, has a unique cultural landscape with approximately 80 villages and 70 monasteries from various periods.
The nine monasteries and churches selected are: Mor Sobo Church, Virgin Mary Church, Deyrulzafaran Monastery, Mor Gabriel Monastery, Mor Abai Monastery, Mor Loozor Monastery, Mor Yakup Monastery, Mor Quryaqos Church and Mor Azozo Church.
