Call for unity at European Dersim Festival

The 15th European Dersim Culture Festival has issued a call to join the event under the slogan 'Let us flow like the Munzur.'

The 15th European Dersim Culture Festival, led by the Democratic Alawite Federation (FEDA), the European Federation of Democratic Dersim Associations (ADEF), and the Dersim Reconstruction Congress (DIK), will take place on May 30–31, 2025, at Rebstockpark in Frankfurt.

The festival aims to bring together broad participation under the call to embrace the history, culture, and identity of Dersim.

Organized under the slogan "We are neither Khorasan nor Tunceli! We are Dersim!" (''Ma ne Xorasan me, ne ki Tunceli! Ma Dersim me!''), the event seeks to preserve the cultural and social existence of Dersim in the face of assimilation, denial, and ecological destruction.

The organizing institutions drew attention to the Turkish state’s repressive policies targeting the people of Dersim, stating that the festival aims to link historical and contemporary struggles.

The statement criticized the Turkish state’s policies of forced displacement, attempts to erase identity and collective memory, ecological devastation, and cultural assimilation—and called for robust participation in the festival as a form of resistance.

The statement emphasized that the Turkish state is deploying a modern version of the 'Eastern Reform Plan' through methods such as by promoting drugs, gambling, and prostitution among the youth of Dersim. It also drew attention to the plundering of Dersim’s natural environment through dam construction and mining projects.

As part of the festival, there will be a strong emphasis on the historical and cultural values of Dersim. Artists, writers, and intellectuals are expected to participate, and the cultural heritage of Dersim will be carried into the future through songs, laments, and sacred hymns performed in the native language.

The festival committee called on all people from Dersim and their friends to join in solidarity, declaring: 'Let us flow like the Munzur, let us meet in Frankfurt.'
