A video in memory of Jina Amini

Jina Amini has become a symbol of the resistance of Kurdish women. A music clip by Beser Şahin and Memo Gül released on the second anniversary of her death pays tribute to this struggle.

Jina Amini died on 16 September 2022 at the age of 22 in a hospital in Tehran as a result of mistreatment by the Iranian morality police.

The Kurdish woman from Saqqez had been arrested on the grounds that she had not covered her hair properly. Her violent death became a symbol of the global struggle for women's rights and freedom and once again exposed the oppression that women in Iran are subjected to. The slogan "Jin Jiyan Azadî" (Woman Life Freedom), which emerged from the Kurdish women's movement, became internationally known through the uprisings that broke out in Rojhilat (East Kurdistan) and Iran two years ago and continues to inspire women all over the world. Jina Amini has become a symbol of the resistance of Kurdish women.

The song and clip “Jina Amini” by Beser Şahin and Memo Gül, released to mark the second anniversary of Amini’s death, pays tribute to this struggle. The video is a collective project of the Kurdî recording studio, in which the musicians Kemal Ceylan and Ömer Arslan and Can TV also participated. For the singer Beser Şahin, "Jina Amini" is not just a song, but an expression of the pain and freedom struggle of Kurdish women.

As a Kurd and musician, she was deeply touched by the death of Jina Amini, said Beser Şahin. Many other Kurdish women have been targeted for murder recently, including journalists and freedom fighters.

Şahin said: "Jina Amini was a young woman from Rojhilat. She was murdered by the mullah regime. The reason was not just her beauty and her hair, but her identity. There was a before and after this murder. Our people have paid a very heavy price for their identity, their culture, their own sense of belonging, for every sentence they have written, every work the artists have produced. Jina Amini was murdered using her hair as an excuse. But this was a message. Our people living in that territory, the Kurdish people, are under threat. They are under threat of executions and massacres."

Şahin added that with the death of JIna Amini, the slogan "Jin Jiyan Azadî" became a symbol of the struggle of women around the world, and said: "If it were not for the strong struggle of Kurdish women, Jina Amini could have been forgotten like other murders committed by the regime."
