Hamburg Supreme Court has sentenced Kurdish politician Mehmet Demir to three years in prison on charges of “membership to PKK” (Kurdistan Workers' Party).

Hamburg Supreme Court has sentenced Kurdish politician Mehmet Demir to three years in prison on charges of “membership to PKK” (Kurdistan Workers' Party).

Hamburg Supreme Court has announced the verdict in the hearing of Kurdish politician Mehmet Demir who has been jailed for the past one year. The Court Board President Klaus Rühle defended that the judiciary had to abide by the decisions anticipated by the political ruling.

Predicating the verdict on a decision made by German Federal Court in 2013, the court board evaluated the PKK as "a terrorist organisation committing murders abroad in line with its objectives"

The Court Board President Klaus Rühle on the other hand described the heavy repression of Kurdish people in Turkey, Turkish state's support to ISIS gangs and murder of Sakine Cansız, Fidan Doğan and Leyla Şaylemez by MIT (Turkish intelligence service) in Paris in 2013 as 'already known truths'.

Hamburg Left Party MP Martin Dolzer, who also followed the hearing, criticized the court board for denying the Kurdish people's right to self-defense despite acknowledging the Turkish state's collaboration with ISIS and the systematic violation of Kurdish people's human rights.

As the German state continues pursuing a repressive policy against Kurds, another Kurdish politician Bedrettin Kavak who was detained in Düsseldorf for the same charges three days ago, has also been remanded in custody.

The Kurdish institution AZADÎ which provides legal support to Kurds in Germany stated that the German state worked for the Turkish state by criminalizing Kurds, and called upon all democratic forces to protest this attitude of the German government.

57-year-old Bedrettin Kavak from Batman spent 22 years in Turkish prisons. He now needs proper medical treatment due to a heart attack he suffered two years ago. He is expected to be referred to Hamburg.

Ahmet Çelik, former executive of YEK-KOM (Federation of Kurdish Associations in Germany), was also remanded in custody on July 18.
