KON-MED meets with Kurdish members of the German Parliament

KON-MED met with Kurdish members of the German Parliament in Berlin to discuss the situation of the Kurdish diaspora in Germany and political developments in Turkey.

The Confederation of Kurdish Communities in Germany (KON-MED) met in Berlin with Kurdish members of the German Parliament Gökay Akbulut, Cansu Özdemir, Ferhat Koçak, Mirze Edis, and Cem İnce. The co-chairs of KON-MED, Ruken Akça and Kerem Gök, also attended the meeting.

The meeting focused on the situation of the Kurdish diaspora in Germany, political developments in Turkey and Kurdistan, and the structural problems facing the Kurdish community.

In this context, KON-MED emphasized the importance of shaping current political processes through democratic and peaceful means. In particular, it said, Germany must play a principled, constructive, and active role in this regard.

Discussion on social, cultural, economic, and educational rights for the Kurds in Germany

Another key issue discussed at the meeting was the question of social, cultural, economic, and educational rights for the Kurdish community living in Germany.

During the meeting, solutions to structural problems such as discrimination, lack of political representation, and the erosion of Kurdish identity were discussed. Particular emphasis was placed on the need for young Kurds to grow up aware of their language, culture, and origins, to become actively involved in organized structures, and to build closer ties to the diaspora—as a prerequisite for a resilient, vibrant community.

Expanding political representation

KON-MED emphasized the importance of stronger Kurdish representation in the German Parliament as a decisive step toward political visibility and participation for Kurdish society. At the same time, it was highlighted how important it is to deepen relations with supportive members of parliament—especially those who defend democratic values and promote solidarity between peoples. This, according to KON-MED, will enable social demands to be articulated more effectively and made more visible.

Expanding joint strategies

The participants agreed on the need to develop a common approach in their efforts to promote the rights, identity, and democratic achievements of the Kurdish population in Germany. KON-MED and the Kurdish members of parliament reaffirmed their intention to continue the dialogue, intensify their cooperation, tackle social challenges together, and strengthen the position of Kurds in Germany in the long term.
