Tension as 14 July approaches

A large number of police units and armed vehicles have been sent to Diyarbakýr from 11 cities two days before the 14 July rally for which the governor denied permission saying he had intelligence information on the possible presence of illegal groups and organizations that would try to get people on the streets by misleading them, would confront security forces and stage illegal activities and actions. It was reported that the transfer of police teams and vehicles into the city has been carried out upon the request of Governor and instruction of the Interior Minister.

Following the BDP (Peace and Democracy Party) and DTK (Democratic Society Congress) joint press conference which announced that the freedom rally will be held despite the ban, Diyarbakýr Governor held a meeting which was attended by police, intelligence and gendarme authorities in the region.

The meeting at governor’s office on Thursday reportedly handled the security measures to be taken before the meeting.  According to the decisions made here, all entrance and exit points of the city will be taken under the control of security powers.

Armed and TOMA type police vehicles have already been deployed in entrance and exit points of the city today.
