New school for the children of Afrin in Shehba

Heyva Sor a Kurd and Democratic Society Education Committee (KPCD) started building schools for students staying at Serdem Camp. 650 primary school students will study in 20 classrooms in the school to be built in the village of Tıl Sosin in Shehba.

Thousands of Afrin people continue their resistance in Shehba where they resettled after leaving their homes when Turkey and its mercenary allies attacked the region, on 20 January 2018.

Ruined school buildings and houses were converted into new school so that the children of the families who settled in the camps and villages in the region were not deprived of their right to education. In addition, several classrooms were opened in the Berxwedan and Serdem camps.

However, the lack of equipment in the classrooms to pass the winter months and the problem linked to the increasing temperatures of the summer months had negative effects on the health of the students.

Taking action against this situation, Heyva Sor a Kurd and Democratic Society Education Committee (KPCD) started building schools for students staying at Serdem Camp. 650 primary school students will study in 20 classrooms in the school to be built in the village of Tıl Sosin in Shehba. An area of 1,100 square meters was allocated for school construction.

The authorities told ANHA that the school will be ready for students on the first day of the 2020-2021 school year.

Heyva Sor a Kurd Afrin Canton Member, Mejdolîn Zeyno, said that the people of Afrin have been living in displaced conditions for 2 years and that they have been providing education under these conditions. “Our children in Serdem Camp were continuing their education in tents. This had a negative impact on their health. Now, all students from the first to the sixth grade will be able to learn in a healthy way in a proper school.”

Heyva Sor a Kurd also plan to open a school in Berxwedan Camp.
