Mother tongue education must be thoroughly evaluated, said president of Turkish Turkish Industrialists'and Businessmen's Association (TÜSÝAD) Umit Boyner. “All citizens must receive education in Turkish but if a citizen demands to receive education in another language which is his mother tongue then the state must provide him with this opportunity” added Boyner.
Speaking at a panel entitled “The future of Turkey” organised by the Turkish Pharmacists’ Union Umit Boyner said the income injustice between the poor and the rich in Turkey is huge which also applied between the regions. He also said that Turkey is among those countries receiving the highest taxes.
Concerning the new constitution Boyner stated that as TÜSÝAD they are in favour of a participatory democracy and they are also drafting a new constitution. He further stated that the Law on Political Parties is an obstacle in front of participatory democracy and the political parties are led by politburos in a way closed to the people. “The voters cannot influence party programmes and the people are supporting parties as if they are supporting football teams. It is because the system which protects the state against citizens rather than citizens against the state.”
In relation to the mother education Boyner said TÜSÝAD has failed to thoroughly discuss this issue and it is a topic deserves a detailed evaluation. Reminding the fact that the official language of Turkey is Turkish Boyner said: “The state must teach Turkish to the citizens. If the citizens cannot speak Turkish then it is the state’s problem. Although all the citizens are under obligation to learn Turkish if they have mother tongue other than Turkish then the state should give them the opportunity to receive education in their own mother tongue.”
