Turkey and Japan in nuke deal

Today Turkey and Japan signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a nuclear power plant in Sinop.

Taner Yýldýz, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources and his counterpart, Akihiro Ohata signed the MoU. The plan to build a nuclear power plant in Sinop has been strongly opposed by the people living in the area. Protests and demonstrations were staged and a committee organizing the opposition is still very active.

Minister Yýldýz, speaking at a news conference after the signing ceremony, said that, "we signed a deal to establish a nuclear power plant in Turkey in the future. Thanks to the agreement, ways opened for related institutions of Turkey and Japan to make cooperation."

Yýldýz also added that Turkey could make cooperation with Japan in third countries. "Turkey is open to international capital and ready to be a base in this respect," he noted.

Japanese Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Akihiro Ohata said Turkey and Japan would boost bilateral relations basing of this MoU.

As to when the project would start, Ohata said the Japanese party would get prepared in three months as minister Yýldýz expressed eagerness of Turkish party to obtain a result in three months.

Turkey launched talks with Japan to construct a nuclear power plant in Turkey's northern province of Sinop earlier this month after negotiations with South Korea had failed.
