The Idlib crisis: Merkel-Macron-Putin-Erdogan summit to be held

German Chancellor Angela Merkel announced that French, German, Turkish and Russian leaders will be holding a summit about the Syrian civil war in October.

Chancellor Merkel has received Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Berlin despite intense protests, and said they “favor a four-way meeting” in the joint press conference.

According to the Chancellor, the summit will be held among Turkish, German, French and Russian leaders.

Merkel said, “Because the situation is still fragile. We are hoping to hold [the summit] in October.”

Merkel also said the situation in Idlib as the Syrian regime prepares for an operation will be discussed in the summit as well.

Turkey acts as a tutelar for gangs in Idlib, while the agreement they reached with Russia stipulates the forming of a buffer zone between the areas the regime and gangs control. Turkey is supposed to pull their gangs back from the 15 to 20 km wide area determined by Moscow.
