Shop closed in several cities to mark anniversary of plot against Ocalan

Shop closed in Kurdish cities to mark the anniversary of 9 October plot against Kurdish leader Abdullah Ocalan.

On 9 October 1998, Ocalan was forced leave Syria after pressure from Syrian and Turkish authorities and landed in Greece. This was the first step of the journey for Ocalan, which ended in Nairobi, when he was captured by a special Turkish army unit with the help of Israel and U.S.

This incident is called 9 October complott since then.

All shops remained closed in Diyarbakir, Mus, Batman, Hakkari, Siirt, Sirnak and Van in protest of 9 October complot. Also in Cizre, Silopi and Ýdil, towns of Sirnak province and in Yuksekova, Semdinli and Cukurca, towns of Hakkari province all shops were closed and only a few people were on the streets.

In Cizre clashes broke out with protesters and Turkish police when Kurdish youths set roadblocks on Cizre-Idýl mainroad.

Chanting slogans in favor of PKK and Kurdish leader Abdullah Ocalan, protesters hit back Turkish police with stones and molotov coktail as security forces attacked them with gas bombs.

One teenager was detained during demonstrations.

In most populous Kurdish city, Diyarbakýr, most of the shops were closed in protest of 9 October complot. The tension in the city remained high as Turkish police tightened security situation.

The protests were also effective in Silvan, Lice, Bismil and Dicle, towns of Diyarbakýr province.

Mardin was also a hotspot for protesters. In Kýzýltepe, Nusaybin, Derik, Dargecit and Mazidagi almost all of the shops remained closed except pharmacies and bakeries.

Residents of Siirt, Batman and Mus also joined the protest.

In Batman Turkish police threatened shop-owners to open their shops. Despite that almost 90 percent of the shops remained closed.
