Seven killed, nine missing after flooding in northern Turkey

Due to heavy rainfall, several villages in Giresun province on the Black Sea coast have been devastated by the tidal waves. Seven people died and nine are still missing.

In the province of Giresun on the Black Sea coast, heavy rainfall has caused a severe flood disaster. A road was washed out and slid into the depths, sand and debris from the streams caused great damage in the villages, vehicles sank into the mud on the roads.

Seven people have died so far and nine others are still missing. 17 buildings were destroyed in the villages of Doğankent, Dereli and Yağlıdere and more than 360 others were damaged. 70 villages and eight districts were cut off from the power supply.

A military vehicle manned by five soldiers and an excavator driver was hit by a landslide and buried. So far two of the soldiers have been recovered dead.

180 kilometers further east in Rize province, several residential buildings were evacuated after landslides. Further destruction in the region is expected due to the continuing rainfall.
