Taksim Solidarity organised a number of actions to remember the victims and the protests in Istanbul.
Taksim Solidarity confirmed that it will return to Gezi Park on the 31 May to mark the 5th anniversary of the protest. Architect Mücella Yapıcı said that Gezi continues to be the government’s worst nightmare.
Taksim Solidarity held a press conference at the the Union of Turkish Engineers and Architects Chamber (TMMOB) Büyükkent Branch to disclose the program of the activities organised for the 5th anniversary of Gezi Park protest.
Journalist Ahmet Şık, HDP candidate for Istanbul at the 24 June elections participated at the press conference together with Gülsüm Elvan, the mother of Berkin Elvan, who lost his life after being hit by a police gas can. Two of the wounded of Gezi, Okan Göçer and Volkan Kesen Bilici and CHP Istanbul MP, Ali Şeker also attended.
Lawyer Yalçın Deniz Özer talked about the ongoing judicial process opened to make the responsible for the death during the protest are brought to justice.
There has been a lot of whitewashing when it came to the killing of protesters. “Mehmet Ayvalıtaş's death - said the layer - was presented as a simple traffic accident and Ayvalıtaş was actually held responsible for his own death”.
In the case of Ali İsmail Korkmaz, the defendants were given reduced sentences, while the police office who hit Ethem Sarısülük was just fined. The soldier who shot Medeni Yildirim was acquitted. Berkin Elvan's case opened 3,5 years after his death.
The lawyer pointed out that there is only one line of reasoning: who gave the orders are not prosecuted.
Gezi Park victim Volkan Kesen Bilici, who was injured during the protest, described the problems he had to live after the protest.
Bilici said that the families were forced to travel hundreds of kilometers to follow the trial proceedings. Bilici said that they could not enter the courtrooms in some cases.
Architect Yapıcı, who said that Gezi Park gave millions of citizens hope of a beautiful future, added: “Gezi Park resistance was an example for many around the world”.
The price paid by protesters was very high, 36 people were killed and thousands were wounded when the government ordered to crash the resistance.
The protest started when Erdogan’s government announced it would go ahead with plans to build a shopping mall and wipe out Gezi Park, one of the few oxygen lungs in the centre of Istanbul, Taksim square.
