Release of Basque prisoner in France appealed

Basque political prisoner Frédéric "Xistor" Haramburu could be released on parole on 6 August, but the French National Anti-Terrorism Prosecutor's Office has appealed the decision.

The French National Anti-Terrorism Prosecutor's Office has appealed a decision of the Criminal Execution Court which had granted the controlled release (via an electronic bracelet) of Basque political prisoner Frédéric Haramburu, sentenced to life imprisonment in 1997.

Frédéric "Xistor" Haramburu, a Basque separatist imprisoned for nearly thirty years and sentenced to life imprisonment for belonging to the French ETA commando, could be released on an electronic bracelet on 6 August according to a judicial source.

"The Paris Penal Enforcement Court (TAP) has granted electronic supervision parole" to Haramburu as of August 6," the source added.

Should the Paris Court of Appeal overturn the TAP decision before August 6, the Basque separatist, now in his sixties, will remain prison.”
