Many people were taken into custody in Istanbul and Izmir ahead of the 1 May celebrations tomorrow.
The members of the 1 May 2025 Taksim Organizing Committee, who called on people to march to Taksim at a press conference they held on Tuesday in Beyoğlu, Istanbul, were taken into custody earlier this morning.
Those detained were taken to the Provincial Police Department in Fatih. It was reported that the chair of the Highways Transport and Laborers Union (Kataş-Sen) Şahin Başaraner, and the Organization Secretary of the Construction Workers Union (İnşaat-İş) Yunus Özgür were also among those detained.
In Izmir, the Education and Science Workers' Union (Eğitim Sen) Izmir Branch 5 President Savaş Candemir and his wife Gülsen Candemir, university students, unionists, members of the Labor Party, SOL Party, Turkish Workers' Party (TIP) and Partizan, were detained. It was stated that these people were detained on the grounds of "propaganda for an illegal organization".
