MP Jelpke: Don't allow Erdoğan's men to carry guns at G-20 Summit

Erdoğan's 12 guards who attacked Kurds in the US attending the G-20 summit in Hamburg was vetoed by Germany, and now there are discussions on whether to allow the Turkish president's security detail to carry guns.

Germany vetoed the 12 guards of Turkish President Erdoğan attending the G-20 summit in Hamburg, and now the country is discussing whether to issue gun permits for the Turkish president's security detail.

Die Linke spokesperson Ulla Jelpke spoke to the ANF and made a call to "not give this permission to Erdoğan's detail".

The G-20 summit will be held in Hamburg this year on July 7-8. One of the leaders to attend the summit is the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, and as preparations for anti-Erdoğan protests continue, the issue of Erdoğan's bodyguards remains on the public agenda in Germany.

Germany had issued an official statement and said the 12 guards who attacked Kurds in front of the Turkish Embassy Residence following Erdoğan's meeting with US President Donald Trump in the White House in May will not be allowed to enter the country.

TURKEY WANTED TO TAKE THE SAME BODYGUARDS TO HAMBURG

But the appeal Turkey submitted to the German Foreign Ministry included the 12 bodyguards in the 50-person list. German Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Martin Schäfer made a statement yesterday and said, "The German government is very certain that these particular guards won't be accompanying the Turkish president in Hamburg."

On the other hand, the issue of whether the security detail to accompany Erdoğan will be allowed to carry arms or not is not clear. The Federal Administrative Department has already issued gun permits for 9 of the leaders to visit the country, including the US, the UK, Mexico, Vietnam, South Africa and the Netherlands.

ANF asked the Federal Administrative Department press center whether the Turkish detail was issued permits, and received the response that Turkey has not filed an official appeal yet. The delegations' security personnel can carry arms only if Germany issues them permits.

Meanwhile, Germany has not rejected any of the 9 countries that did appeal. The Turkish detail is expected to receive the permits, with some conditions.

DIE LINKE: "DON'T ISSUE GUN PERMITS TO ERDOĞAN'S DETAIL"

Die Linke Domestic Affairs Spokesperson Ulla Jelpke spoke to the ANF and called on the Merkel government to "not allow the Turkish delegation to carry arms". Jelpke mentioned Erdoğan's bodyguards attacking Kurdish protesters in May in Washington and continued:

"The duty of protecting guest leaders in Hamburg should only fall to German security units. Intelligence agents, police and security officers in foreign leaders' teams should not be allowed to carry arms. In particular, Erdoğan's escort has the potential to intervene in protests with firearms. I'm hoping the federal government will reject Turkey's appeal to carry arms."

HAMBURG POLICE'S ONLY CONCERN IS ERDOĞAN'S MEN!

Last week, Hamburg Police Chief Ralf Martin Meyer warned the "security details of foreign leaders", and Erdoğan's in particular, against events that may occur during the G-20 Summit. The police object to Turkish bodyguards leaving the hotel Erdoğan will stay in.

A similar warning was issued by the Hamburg prosecutor's office. The Hamburg Prosecutor stated that if scenes similar to Washington take place in Germany, there will be immediate intervention and the legal process would start at once.
