MHP leader demands closure of Turkish medical association

The chairman of the extreme right-wing MHP demands the closure of the Turkish Medical Association, claiming that the association is "as dangerous as Coronavirus” and its protests against the government's normalization plans are a "treacherous act".

The Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) Leader Devlet Bahçeli calls for the closure of the Turkish Medical Association (TTB). The association is "as dangerous as Coronavirus," and protests by the medical profession against the government's normalization plans are tantamount to a "treasonous act," wrote the head of the AKP government's right-wing extremist coalition partner on Twitter. In addition, he said that those responsible in the medical association should be brought to justice. A storm of indignation has been blowing in online networks and the majority of users are behind the medical association.

The background to the threats against the Medical Association is the campaign it has launched recently under the motto "You are not able to manage the pandemic. We are exhausted and we are dying". Because of the overburdening of the health care system and the government's "normalization plan", the Medical Association had initiated a week of action on Monday, during which demonstrations and rallies took place throughout the country. Members were also called upon to observe a minute's silence and wear black ribbons on their clothing because of the high death toll among health workers.

The Medical Association has long criticized the government's "crisis management" and doubts the data of the Ministry of Health on the pandemic. The association has repeatedly said that the government is hiding the real extent of the problem in order to write a success story, at least in terms of health policy. In many regions, the association also registers many more coronavirus cases than the ministry admits. A few days ago the former TTB chairman Vedat Bulut warned that the health system in Turkey was on the verge of complete collapse. In particular in the capital Ankara the situation is problematic, it is missing beds and ever more physicians quit their job.

So far, more than 900 doctors throughout Turkey are said to have quit their jobs. Previously, there had been great resentment in the health care system due to the lack of protective measures and the continuing relativization of the coronavirus danger. Altogether at least 30,000 workers in the health service of Turkey and Northern Kurdistan were infected with the coronavirus, 80 of them died according to official data.
