Mexico demand justice for Giovanni Lopez killed while in custody

Official statements said that the arrest was due to the violent behaviour of López; however, witnesses assured that he was arrested for not wearing a face mask.

Students from the University of Guadalajara (UdeG), demanded justice for Giovanni López, who was arrested by police officers allegedly for not wearing a face mask and ended up dead.

The Federation of University Students (FEU) said that the responsible of the murder are known and should be brought to justice.

Giovanni López, 30, worked as a bricklayer and lived in the municipality of Ixtlahuacán de los Membrillos, in the state of Jalisco. He was arrested by up to 10 elements of the Municipal Police on 4 May after having gone out to eat with his family.

Official statements said that the arrest was due to the violent behaviour of López; however, witnesses assured that he was arrested for not wearing a face mask.

The day after the arrest, on 5 May, López’ family was informed that he had been transferred to the Civil Hospital of Guadalajara. However when they went there, they were informed that he was not in the hospital and that his body had already been transferred to the Forensic Medical Service.

López’ family claimed that Giovanni's body has bruised and traces of torture, including an alleged shot in the foot.

After the news of López’ death became public, last Thursday, protests broke out in Jalisco demanding justice for the young man.

Protesters denounced the violent arrest and disappearance of students who had joined the demonstrations.
