Left Party demands Sweden to apologise to Kurds for Palme murder

The Left Party asked Sweden to apologize to the Kurds, which it wrongly accused of killing Olof Palme in 1986.

Left Party's Foreign Policy Spokesperson, Håkan Svenneling, asked in a written question to Parliament for Sweden to apologize to the Kurds, which it wrongly accused of killing former Prime Minister Olof Palme in 1986.

Svenneling recalled that the Olof Palme investigation ended on 10 June 2020, and the Prosecutor Krister Petersson closed the case as the person accused of the murder died.

Stating that the police were following different leads in the Palme murder investigation, the Left Party Spokesperson recalled that “for a period, the PKK lead was a theory that completely dominated. But it turned out to be completely wrong.”

Reminding that many Kurdish families were accused of involvement in the murder, Svenneling said that the Kurds were subjected to unjustified and extensive pressure and attacks by Swedish institutions and that the residence permits of some Kurdish immigrants were withdrawn.

Stating that the Kurds living in Sweden were harmed by the accusations and that the repression against the Kurds continued for a long time, Svenneling added: "Now that the investigation is concluded, it is time to come to terms with the mistakes and apologize to those who suffered" and asked Sweden to apologize to the Kurds.

He asked Justice Minister Mikael Damberg to take the initiative to apologize to the Kurds.
