The Swiss Kurdish Institute and the Lausanne Democratic Kurdish Community Center organized an event to celebrate 15 May, Kurdish Language Day.
The event was attended by many people, and featured a panel about the importance of the struggle for language against assimilation policies and the responsibility of Kurds in the diaspora to preserve their language. The panel was followed by poetry and music performances.
Following a one-minute moment of silence in memory of the Martyrs of Kurdistan, children who attend Kurdish language courses offered by the Swiss Kurdish Institute performed the Kurdish national anthem, 'Ey Reqîb.'
The program continued with a panel featuring author and poet Mahsum Nîsebînî and the co-chair of the Swiss Kurdish Institute, Dîlber Hema.
Mahsum Nîsebînî spoke about the history and the turning points of the Kurdish language, describing its dialects as "branches of the same tree." He highlighted the ongoing struggle against assimilation policies and stressed the importance of celebrating this special day with greater participation and enthusiasm. Nîsebînî read one of his own poems to end his speech.
Dîlber Hema, co-chair of the Swiss Kurdish Institute, drew attention to the responsibility of Kurds in the diaspora regarding the Kurdish language.
