Kurdish Mayor will be imprisoned in a week

Mayor of Yuksekova district of Hakkari Ruken Yetiskin will be imprisoned on 7 December in order to serve her sentence.

Yetiskin was on trial over her speech which she delivered in a youth celebration in Istanbul on 16 May 2004. She was charged for disseminating propaganda for an outlawed organisation and was sentenced to 10-month imprisonment by the Istanbul Heavy Criminal Court Nr. 9. Although she appealed the judgement the sentence was upheld by the Turkish Court of Cassation four months ago.

Upon her excuse the sentence was postponed for 4 months which will end on 7 December. It is reported that she will be imprisoned in Bitlis E type Prison.

It is also reported that member of the city council lawyer Erdal Aydin was elected to act as vice-mayor during her absence.
