Kurdish activist shot by Turkish soldiers

A Kurdish activist was shot on the head by Turkish soldiers in Hakkari this morning.

Spokesperson for Revolutionary Patriotic Youth Sedat Karabag was shot on the head by Turkish soldiers in a control point. He was seriously wounded and taken to Van State Hospital.

According to the statements of the witnesses two cars were stopped by Turkish soldiers in a roadblock in Yuksekova-Van road. Nine Kurdish activists were ordered out of the cars and laid down by the Turkish soldiers.

Meanwhile a soldiers opened fire and shot Karabag on the head, wounding him seriously. Turkish soldiers detained the other eight and kept Karabag on the scene for hours before taking him to Van State Hospital.

Turkish army said Karabag shot himself when Turkish soldiers tried to take him into custody but Kurdish sources denied these claims.

Karabag is reported to be in serious but stable condition.

There are still no information about whereabouts of Kurdish activists who were detained.

Thousands of Kurds protested shooting of Kurdish activist in Yuksekova today. With deputy mayýr Erdal Aydin among them the crowd marched from Peace and Democracy Party’s local office to the Prison Junction.

A local BDP official Erol Aydýn read a press statement here saying that the incident is clearly an execution. Aydin said soldiers and police are provoking Kurds for violence.

The protestors clashed with police after the demonstration. Turkish soldiers threw water cannons and gas bombs while Kurdish youths hurdled stones and Molotov cocktails.

All shops are closed in Yuksekova and the clashes continue as of Saturday evening.
