KCK trial adjourned until 13 January

KCK trial in which Kurdish mayors and politicians are being tried has been adjourned until 13 January 2011. The defendants will remain in custody by then.

The defendants kept insisting on speaking Kurdish before the court however the chief judge gave the floor only to those defendants who wanted to speak Turkish.

Head of Diyarbakir Bar Association Emin Aktar who was defending the Kurdish politicians said before the court that: “Although it was said that there will be zero tolerance to torture and since 18 October there is zero tolerance to Kurdish language.” Aktar also criticized the court and said the court approach to court is political rather than legal. He also added that the Defendants lawyers are all working pro bono as they consider this case against the democratic Kurdish right of the Kurds.

Another defendant lawyer Ercan Kanar said the court that the reason for such a court is political. He also asked the court what they would think if AKP members were tried in a case which is a catastrophe in terms of evidence.

The lawyer Meral Danis said to the court panel that this is a case in which the Kurds and the Kurdish language are being tried. She also referred the Guardian newspaper which defined this court as a shame on democracy.

At the end, the court rejected the demands for lifting abroad ban on the Mayor of Diyarbakir Osman Baydemir and adjourned the trial until 13 January 2011.
