Jónasson: Öcalan's call opens way to genuine peace

Iceland's former Minister of the Interior, Ögmundur Jónasson, answered journalist Erem Kansoy's question and comments on Kurdish leader Abdullah Öcalan's call for peace and democracy.

Ögmundur Jónasson said that Abdullah Öcalan's message "moved him "because, in a world in which the battlefield has become synonymous with success, Öcalan's voice comes from Imrali" and it is a voice that challenges all this. Jónasson added that the decision taken by the PKK comes "from a position of strength, not weakness. Moral and military strength." 

Ögmundur Jónasson is an Icelandic politician who served as a member of Althingi, the Icelandic Parliament, from 1995 to 2016. He is the former Minister of the Interior; Minister of Justice and human rights and minister of transport, communications and local government; and Minister of Health and social security.
